Tournon-d'Agenais, a royal bastide!

Tournon-d'Agenais was founded in 1270 by Raymond VII (the Count of Toulouse), a major patron of bastides in the region (also responsible for Cordes-sur-Ciel, Puymirol, Castelnau-de-Montmiral, etc.). It is a small bastide, but it has all the characteristics of a larger one: streets built around a central arcaded square, a well-planned grid of parallel and perpendicular streets, and a charter of customs (which governed community life and commerce in the bastide at its creation, attesting to its official establishment as a new town).

Since the bastide is situated on a hill, if you park at the bottom, you'll have to start by climbing. There are several ways to reach it, including a staircase with over 200 steps. Each entrance to the town had its own gate. The main gate is still standing. In the main square, several features testify to Tournon-d'Agenais's bastide status: its covered arcades, allowing trade to continue year-round; a market hall ; the town hall ; and a well.

The walk won't be long, but it will be pleasant. In the warmer months, there's a bit more life, but on a beautiful autumn or winter day, it's still very enjoyable! A few artisans still occupy the old shops, those commercial buildings with gables facing the street. There are some pretty houses in the village, with corbelled upper stories and half-timbering filled with wattle and daub or more recent materials.

Walk to the public garden, where you'll find a viewpoint indicator offering a clear view to enjoy the panorama. Continue along the city walk, following the ramparts, then descend onto a gravel path lined with vegetation and offering lovely views of the city on both sides.
