Château de Poudenas Castles in Poudenas

Built in the 13th century by the lords of Podenas, vassals of Edward I Plantagenet, Duke of Aquitaine and King of England, Poudenas castle defends the Gélise valley, which it overlooks by 50 metres, at the outlet of the Landes Forest.

A journey back in time is guaranteed: come and discover the military fortification with its double enclosure, the 16th century castle redesigned for living quarters with its keep decorated with mullioned windows, and finally, the complete transformation made in the 17th century, of the inner courtyard decorated with terraces supported by arcades, and of the south facade with its triple gallery giving the ensemble the appearance of an Italian palace, a definite influence of Tuscan villas and their landscape.

With its 15 hectares planted from the end of the 18th to the beginning of the 19th century (by the Count of Dijon, owner of the property at that time), the park of the Château de Poudenas offers itself to you, the bucolic walker, as well as to you, the distinguished botanist or ... budding botanist !!!

Jean's tip: or an overall view of the south side of the château de Poudenas, take the Romanesque bridge over the Gélise in the centre of the village and follow the road up to the right, or go left and look down into the valley. You can admire the castle overlooking the village and its old fortified chapel.
