Lauzun Castle

Located in the Pays de Lauzun region, the Château de Lauzun, the former residence of the first Duke of Lauzun, is a Renaissance-style complex whose remains, discovered during excavations, date back to the 12th century. Remodeled throughout history, it was restored in the early 1990s and opened to the public. You can visit during the summer season. You will appreciate its two monumental fireplaces as well as the beautiful 16th-century paving in the guardroom.

Gavaudun Castle

Not far from the border with the Dordogne, the Château de Gavaudun sits atop a 40-meter- high rocky spur. Its keep peacefully overlooks the Haute Lède Valley, a protected nature reserve. Owned by the local municipality, it is open to visitors from the warmer months onwards, offering educational and entertaining guided tours, complete with a treasure hunt ! Remember to bring a picnic, and in summer, set aside extra time to participate in workshops led by local associations.

Bonaguil Castle

It's a true medieval fortress ! A fortified castle just like we imagine in our childhood dreams. Located not far from Fumel, Bonaguil Castle is a military castle that perfectly exemplifies the ingenuity of the Middle Ages in defending against and attacking intruders from this hilly countryside. Drawbridge, keep, tower… It must have been impressive even when it was built in 1483, and it's still breathtaking today! The impregnable castle, as it's often called, has never been attacked! A stroke of luck, or a deterrent armada for enemies?

The Castle of the Dukes of Duras

A must-see in Lot-et-Garonne! As its name suggests, it's located in Duras. The Château de Duras is open from mid-May to the end of December. Visitors can explore it with an audio guide or on guided tours that take them through 30 restored rooms, retracing the history and architecture of the site from the Middle Ages to the French Revolution.

Today, it's a pleasure residence, though it was once a fortified settlement and a stronghold. Perfectly preserved and constantly being renovated to offer an unforgettable visitor experience, it's a vibrant place, enlivened by exhibitions and events. Be sure to visit the balcony, the walkways, and climb the tower steps for a 360-degree view and to observe, from its heights, the flower-filled terraces cascading down to the Dropt River. Allow at least half a day for this journey back in time!

Nérac Castle, the Henri IV Castle-Museum

Nérac, this charming historic town, is home to this castle and the main residence of King Henry IV of France from 1577 to 1582. Built in the 15th century, visitors can explore the north wing and its lovely inner courtyard of Château Henri IV. Wander through the vaulted rooms, admire paintings and tapestries, as well as exhibitions.

Fumel Castle

It's a castle of medieval origin, remodeled many times and enhanced with terraces and gardens. Once flanked by five towers, the Château de Fumel now resembles an Italian villa. Venture onto the terraces and towards the open-air theater to enjoy a magnificent panorama of the Lot-et-Garonne countryside and the Lot River below.

Please note that the Château is not open to the public, as it belongs to the Town Hall which has established its administrative offices there, but the beauty of the gardens is well worth a visit. It's a great opportunity for a stroll in Fumel!

The Château du Frechou

Get off the beaten track and visit this castle just a stone's throw from Nérac ; the owner himself will give you the tour. Open to visitors in the summer, and exceptionally on certain days of the year, this medieval castle is located in Fréchou, a charming little village perfect for strolling. You can explore the gardens on your own or take a guided tour of the castle's interior. An intimate and personalized experience awaits, steeped in 800 years of history in this unique setting. Fun fact: the castle hosts the World Melon Seed Spitting Championship in August…

The Feudal Castle of Madaillan

Adorned with a rustic golf course and a medieval garden, the feudal Château de Madaillan was built in the 12th century. It has been lovingly and tenaciously restored by its current owners, Mr. and Mrs. Aurin, since 1990, who are dedicated to providing you with an engaging and immersive visit. Supported by their research, photographs of the restoration, and anecdotes from the château's history, it offers a unique opportunity to delve into the past. Located not far from Agen, it makes for an original afternoon getaway.

Malvirade Castle

In Grezet-Cavagnan, visits to the Château de Malvirade are organized from the beginning of May to the end of September, by reservation only. Come and discover this charming castle, built around a single watchtower to protect the borders with the County of Toulouse, constructed at the request of Eleanor of Aquitaine. From the 15th century onwards, the tower was transformed into a castle. Today, visitors can enjoy a formal French garden surrounding the site, and candlelight tours are offered in the summer!

• The Château de Monteton is a 17th century complex, listed as a historical monument.
• The Château de Montluc, in Estillac, can be visited by appointment. This fortified complex, overlooking the Garonne Valley, dates back to the 13th century. The visit is imbued with the presence of Marshal de Montluc.
• Come and stroll around Frespech Castle, a pretty fortified village far from the main tourist routes, and admire the remains of its castle perched on a rocky spur. Informative panels along the route explain the historical context.
